What causes varicose veins?
Varicose veins are unwanted, abnormal veins. The common
causes are pregnancy, heredity, and jobs requiring long
hours of standing. The underlying problems are leaking
valves inside the veins or proximal venous obstructions
due to tumor or phlebitis. During pregnancy, the enlarged
uterus will sit on major veins in the pelvis and decrease
the venous blood return from the legs to the heart.
This will increase the venous pressure in the vein and
make it engorged, which then develops into a varicose
vein.
Do I have to pay attention or concern
myself with my varicose vein?
Most people do not pay enough attention to their varicose
veins, especially if they are asymptomatic. For untreated
large varicose veins, the risk of developing complications
is high for things such as phlebitis, skin ulcer, and
massive venous bleeding. Large varicose veins may cause
swollen and hypertrophy of the legs due to venous stasis.
Varicose veins can drain out a persons energy
quickly and make the legs tire easily.
Is it a good idea to have my varicose
veins treated?
Yes, especially for the large varicose veins or if they
are bothersome, either by symptoms or self-image. The
result of treatment depends heavily on choosing the
right procedure and the experience of the surgeon. Each
person has different degrees of severity and presentation
of varicose veins. Dr. Sheu will examine each persons
legs and varicose veins carefully with ultrasound to
identify the source of the problem. After that, Dr.
Sheu will design an individualized treatment plan and
discuss the procedure of choice with the person in detail.
The person can expect the most friendly and the best
quality of care when visiting The California Vein Center.
What will happen to the circulation
in my legs after treatment?
There are hundreds of veins inside the leg. After treatment
on those unwanted varicose veins, venous blood in the
leg will find the normal veins to go back to the heart.
The patient may experience better circulation, healthier
and more energetic legs after treatment. Sometimes,
the patient may gain an extra unexpected benefit: The
size of the leg may become smaller and the leg may be
in much better shape.
Does my insurance cover the procedure?
Medicare and most major health insurances cover the
procedure for large or symptomatic varicose veins. Dr.
Sheus office will help patients get approval from
their insurance companies.
